Emacs ignoring X server resource settings

Hi

Emacs on my FC4 box is ignoring the X server resources I have set with xrdb - can anyone suggest why? I know the resources I am using are correct - I use them successfully on other PCs running different distros. If I do:
Code:
xrdb -query
then the resources are listed correctly - the problem is that Emacs is not using them. I can't set the colours, or the size of the Emacs window.

For completeness, the resource settings I am using are:
Code:
emacs*font: -adobe-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-140-75-75-*-*-*
emacs*foreground: Black
emacs*background: White
emacs*region.attributeForeground: Brown
emacs*region.attributeBackground: lightgoldenrod2
emacs*pointerColor: Black
emacs*cursorColor: Black
emacs.geometry: 180x80
I tried without the font line in case Emacs was getting upset about that and ignoring the rest, but no difference.

Thanks

Andy B

UPDATE: I've discovered I can't even specify resources on the command line. For example, this works in Mandriva or Ubuntu, but not under Fedora:
Code:
emacs -xrm "emacs*background:Brown"
Is there something "special" about the version of emacs packaged for Fedora?

Andy B
