Eject/unmount problem in FC6?
Hi,
I just wanted to know if anyone else has problems with ejecting CDs or DVDs in FC6?
It might of course have something to do with KDE as well, but this used to work before.
If I put a CD/DVD in any of my CD/DVD drives, and click on the CD/DVD icon that appears on the desktop, the eject command/eject menu choice/physical eject button won't work anymore.
The eject command gives this error message:
c-b87a71d5:/ext/dl>eject /dev/hdc
umount: /media/FC-6\040i386\040DVD: not found
eject: unmount of `/media/FC-6\040i386\040DVD' failed
I have to first unmount it, as root:
c-b87a71d5:/ext/dl>s umount /dev/hdc
Password:
c-b87a71d5:/ext/dl>eject /dev/hdc
And the drive finally ejects the disc.
Unmounting as user does not work:
c-b87a71d5:/ext/dl>umount /dev/hdd
umount: /dev/hdd is not in the fstab (and you are not root)
The device files are owned by me:
c-b87a71d5:/ext/dl>\ls -l /dev/hd[cd]
brw------- 1 sh disk 22, 0 Oct 28 09:41 /dev/hdc
brw------- 1 sh disk 22, 64 Oct 28 09:41 /dev/hdd
In some old versions you had to be member of a number of groups to be allowed to do certain things. Is this still necessary?

sounds like your /etc/fstab entry for the optical drive is set to user and not users.
user can mount but need root to umount
users can do both

No, I don't have the CD or DVD drives in the fstab. I've only added two extra mount points there, but the rest are the default values after the installation.
It has something to do with this automounting thing built into Linux distributions in the last few years. I have no idea how it works, or where the permissions for that mounting/unmounting is defined.
They all get mounted under /media. The same with usb disks, but I haven't tried any after the installation of FC6.
Does anyone know how this works? Is it some function in Gnome/KDE?

After reading a bit, it seems like kde/gnome talks to hald, that does the actual mounting/unmounting.
Now I just have to find out why it doesn't work...

Wait.. It works if I first chose unmount in the menu... So no problem with permissions at least...

I just checked with a new user. I tried both KDE and Gnome.
The problem is specific to KDE. It works if using Gnome.
So I guess something is wrong in Fedora's KDE setup. But what is wrong?

The problem is solved.
I reported the bug to fedora, and a new eject package will be available tomorrow.
From Fedora:
> it's now fixed in eject-2_1_5-4_1_fc6 which will be available in
> FC6-update tomorrow. Thanks for your report.
