Question Dual Head in Fedora 3

I just installed Fedora Core 3 yesterday and I'm loving it, runs great. I'm currently in KDE 3.3 and I have two video cards with two monitors. I noticed that there is an option in the display settings to enable dual head (unlike RH9) and it loads my second video card correctly, tells me the proper settings and everything. I go to choose my monitor type and press ok and it does nothing. I can click ok a billion times and it won't change anything. Any suggestions on what I should look into? Should I download an updated version of the nvidia drivers? I also ran a full udpate right after I installed, so everything should be updated.

The cards I'm using are:
nVidia Corporation NV25 [GeForece4 Ti 4400] (primary) - w/ Dell 2000FP (Analog) at 1600x1200
nVidia Corporation NV34 Geforce FX 5200 (secondary) - w/ Gateway VX1110 (Analog) at 1600x1200

(from the Hardware Browser)

I'd like to be able to span the desktops to the second monitor (not run the same image on the second monitor) like I do in XP pro. Any help you can give is much appreciated. If there is another thread depicting this information for Fedora Core 3 I apologize and please direct me to that. Thanks.

i have the same problem, exept i am running an AIT radeon 7500 with primary and secondary monitors. I fixed the problem by running the up2date client and receiving the packages system-config-display 1.0.24, you can also just DL it. But this seemed to fix my problem.

Question nVidia Dual Head

Can you tell me how you got your nVidia drivers installed correctly? I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with an nVidia GeForce FX 5200, and I'm VERY new at Fedora Core, so please try to be specific...

Thanks for the help!

Check that post, that's where I found what to do. Look at the second page about half way down, and follow what eGiste says.

Thanks for that link, CarnageBox... There seems to be alot of helpful info there, but I'm still a little confused on how to get the second monitor to work. I think I have the nVidia driver installed correctly - everything seems to work great on Monitor #1, but I'm having the same trouble as in earlier posts here: When I try to turn on the dual head option in the display settings, it just sits there & does nothing - the only thing it will accept is clicking on the "cancel" button.
Do I need to re-install my nVidia drivers? Or am I just missing something else?

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I'm currently using the Gnome desktop, and I noticed you said that you were running KDE. Should I switch to KDE to make the second monitor work, or would that make a difference at all?

Also, how do you switch to KDE?

dual head layouts work at a totally different level to the desktop manager you use. this will have no effect.

Question another dual head fedore core 3 problem

Hi, I have another similar, yet different problem. I have made the switch on my workstation to Fedora Core 3 (from Debian Sarge) and can't get my dual head display working. I had dual heads in debian with or without xinerama, but can't seem to get it working now with the same hardware.

AGP: ATI Radeon 7000
PCI: ATI Radeon 7000

Needless to say, this was confusing in the gui config because of the same boardname. Here's the problem:

1) With both my cards installed, I install Fedora Core 3. It boots with the AGP display working (BIOS is set to AGP primary).

2) I heard once that dual heads are easier to setup if the bios is set to PCI primary, so I change it.

3) Fedora boots on the PCI display. I run system-config-display (which has been updated already) and select as my 2nd card the AGP Radeon 7000. Fedora says X must be restarted. So I do.

4) It hangs. Both displays have green lights, but the system is frozen.

5) I reboot. System inits normal until after HAL daemon, which is where it loads X from xorg.conf if I'm correct.

I have a fair amount of experience doing this in debian, and this is really discouraging. Help would be much appreciated. I also replaced the AGP with an ASUS nvidia GeForce 2 board so I could tell the names apart easier, but no change in behaviour.

klhmbhoot,

It sounds like you're having the same problem I'm having. Does your computer hang on boot, or do you just get one monitor? I noticed in the dual-head section of system-config-display that the default option for the 2nd card is the 1st card, and if they have the same name it can be a royal pain (speaking from experience). Maybe try changing which card fedora is trying to use as the second card; it might be the first card again.

klmbhoot,

my only suggestion would be to do

$ man radeon

There is an Option argument for the device stanza of xorg.conf that you can add to explicitly tell X which head to use on the card.

When X hangs you should be able to look at the log file /var/log/xorg.0.log (or XFree86.0.log on older systems) to see what it's waiting or or other such faults.

as far as having two identical cards, verbosely specifcying the BusID for each card will help distinguish them more accurately
