Drive automount

Just after installing FC5 I could see all my windows drives and media drives under "Computer". But I could not open the harddrives as it showed error like I do not have enough privilage etc even though I was in root. After giving those mount points in fstab the harddrives are unavailable under "computer" but can browse from the mount directories. But I could see the floppy and cd drive also when theres no drive present. Now for last few days I cannot see the floppy. I have to give either the mount command or add the entry in fstab. So whats the sudden problem? I havent changed anything relating to any hardware.
