Dovecot not authenticating

I'm having a very hard time getting dovecot to work on my system. I have gone through the conf file many times changing things over and over. Reinstalled it several times.. even tried installing an older version than this beta one that comes with FC5.

Bottom line is that I can't get it to authorize/authenticate through imap. Says the user is unknown in the log files. Can anyone please help me set this up correctly or possibly post a sample of what it should look like. This is extremely frustrating. The dovecot that came with FC2 was so much easier... had it set up in less than an hour. With this one, about 72 hours later, I still am no further than when I began.

I have sendmail working fine. Can send and receive emails.

Thanks in advance.

If you need any more information, let me know.
