desktop effects interferes with glx

I'm running fedora 8. I like desktop effects and they seem to work fine, but they mess up glx intense programs. glxgears and ppracer are visibly slowed and choppy. Disabling desktop effects restores glx performance (without even restarting X).

I have integrated geforce 6100 graphics with kmod-nvidia drivers from livna. I'm using default xorg.conf "created by livna-config-display". Is this my hardware limit, or is there a tweak that will fix both?

Distribution: Switched to regualr Ubuntu, because I don't like KDE4, at all. Looks like vista on crack.....

I suspect it's just that desktop effects really stresses even good hardware.

Good luck...
