Dell Latitude D500 screen problem

Hi

What should I do if I have that kind of problem:
I want to change my text-console resolution to 1024. Edited grub.conf file and added vga=733 as i read from "google->dell d500 on linux" , but it didn't work.
So i edited grub.conf back to original state, but besides that i don't see text-console on hi res, I don't see text-console at all. By that i mean, if i press ctrl-alt-F1 in X, it displayes black screen without any cursor or dot --- completely black. But when i boot up - the text-console is displayed as it should be. But something happens when the X is loaded. When i shut down the computer the text-console does not get displayed, but again there is that black screen till finally may laptop is shut down.

I wounder what causes that and how to fix that?
My computer is Dell Latitude D500.
OS is FC4.

And speaking of shutting down - how the hell in KDE should i shut down my computer? It's stupid to log off all the time and then have a chance to reboot or shut down.

To be able to shutdown in KDE, you must be running KDM. Fedora uses GDM by default. Edit your /etc/sysconfig/desktop file and add the line DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE". Then reboot. Now, when you choose logout from the K menu, you will be given a choice of End Session, Shutdown, and Reboot.
