crontab settings

Hello,
I have a server on FC4 .
I trying to get a process run hourly during
the day and every 3 hours during night.
I added the following line in /etc/crontab.

0 9-17,18-8/2 * * * root /usr/local/bin/statupdate -u

But I think it is not running the process as scheduled.
Any idea where I went wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Varun

Firstly, wouldn't it be 18-8/3, if you want it every three hours?
And I'm not sure but what that 18-8 isn't confusing it a bit. It might be worth a shot just spelling it out:

0 3,6,9-17,18,21,24 * * * root /usr/local/bin/statupdate -u
