cracking noise when I audio file

Hi,
I have installed FC4 (along with Windows XP) on my P4,3.0GHz comp.
I installed xmms and kaffeine using yum. But, when I play any audio file, a kind of cracking noise comes along with the actual audio that is supposed to be played. I noticed that a similar cracking noise accompanies all Gaim sounds. On the other hand, no such problem occurs when I play a video file using MPlayer. There is no such problem when an audio/video file is played in widows. I have a feeling the problem is not due to any of these specific softwares, but due to something else.
Can anyone help me figure out the reason for the problem and its solution???
Thank you in advance.
Nikhil

try turning down your pcm settings.

Got the solution. I just changed the output plugin from Alsa to OSS Driver. Its become alright.:D

Actually, the problem is that in the ALSA driver, there's a lot more inputs to the mixer, and some of them default to on, and at full gain. Hence you get some noise from these enabled inputs.

If you switch back to the Alsa driver, and go through all the inputs and switches, and turn everything off/down you don't need, you'll find that the noise will go away.

You probably should do this anyway; the OSS sound drivers are being deprecated (retired) in favor of ALSA.
