Angry Copy and Paste behaviour change in Fedora Core 2

Subject line states problem.

Problem description: Normally I expect to be able to copy text with the mouse
by holding down on the left most mouse button, dragging the pointer over
the text thereby highlighting it.
Pasting the same text is by moving the mouse to an appropriate location
and clicking with the rightmost mouse button. Although this works with
RedHat 9.0 and "I believe" Fedora Core 1, it fails with Fedora Core 2.
It fails with both KDE and Gnome leading me to believe it is a kernel issue.
However, I can copy and past by highlighting the text and right clicking to
get a drop down menu and selecting "copy" and then "paste".
However I find this to be ridiculously inefficient compared to what
has been possible in past distributions.

Environment details: I'm using an optical mouse with track wheel, i.e. 3 button mouse.
gdm is running, in the F1-F6 terminal windows cut and paste work as expected.
The kernels that this applies to are: 2.6.5-1.358 2.6.7-1.457 2.6.8-1.521
In /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"

I have changed the Emulate3Buttons to "yes" with no change in behaviour.

Does anyone have suggestions as to what might be the cause of this
change in behavious for copy and paste?

"It fails with both KDE and Gnome leading me to believe it is a kernel issue."

In copy and paste the thing that KDE and Gnome have in common is the clipboard. You could run a test and check whether the problem is copying the data to the clipboard or if it is pasting the clipboard to the new location.

Copy and Paste behaviour change in Fedora Core 2

Hi Steve,
I don't believe it is the clipboard. As I mentioned
I can copy and paste by right clicking and selecting
copy or paste from the drop down menu. The copy
function does put the text into the clipboard as expected.
I just tried and confirmed this. And my complaint/problem
with this method is
1. it takes multiple clicks to do a simple operation
which was not necessary in the past versions.
2. Quite often it takes multiple tries to convince the
window gods that what I had highlighted was what I
wanted to copy.
I suspected it might be /etc/X11/xorg.conf (formerly XF86Config)
file but I've not found any evidence to confirm that.
But I do notice that this distro has at least 32 "mouse"
device entries in /dev and I've begun wondering what that
is all about.
thanks for the suggestion.
