LVM (Logical Volume Management) is a way of managing media, not a filesystem. Your partitions can still be formatted as ext3 (or possibly xfs or jfs or ext2 [older/boot] or something else). By means of LVM one can do nice stuff like add a new harddisk to the system and have it attached to the filesystem so that users don't see it as a separate drive, and so on. LVM should not have anything to do with having (or not having) ext3 filesystem on a partition, as far as I understand.
