Connecting to the internet using cablenet

I have recently switched from dialup to cable net. The service provider have configured my connection for Windows XP Prof but I have no idea that how to connect the internet using the same connection. What he had done in windows is as fellows:

1. He has established a local connection to its own network by assigning me a static IP address and the subnet mask.i.e.,
IP address:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

2. Then he went to start -> setting -> network connections -> new connection wizard -> connect to the internet -> setup my connection manually -> connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password.
After giving the user name and password, he instructed me to first start the local area network connection as mentioned in step#1 and then run this connection.

This way I could connect to the internet but have no idea that how I could implement all this in fedora 7. Please Help!

alright.... windows uses PPPOE to connect to the net.. and the service provideer wud have given u the DNS address too.. right?? so u just have to configure ur router in the "link on power" mode.. that is u have to open the router configuration page and in the "wan" tab select "PPP"... if u can specify the routers name i can b specific abt the instructions... not an inssue.. i am sure that there must be a WAN tab in any router configuration page and once u find it just type in ur username and password in the required fields and then type in ur DNS adress to (if required)... then click on "add" or "submit" or "ok" (depending on ur router) to add a configuration.. then go to the ADMIN tab... then click on commit and reboot.. this wil restart ur modem... so by default in windows u can add a new network connection and specify the username and password and connect to the internet... but i guess in FC there is no pppoe support(not sure, sorry if i am wrong).. cos as far as i knw we can connect to the internet from FC only when the modem is ocnfigured in the "link on power" mode... so in this mode once u switch on ur modem it automatically gets connected to the ISP and u wil b able to browse...remember to configure ur "network device" from the menu in the GUI mode or in the console...which ever u feel comfortable... configuration doesnt invove big process.. jus add ur ip address, subnet mask and gateway.. then click on activate...now everythign wil b fine... restart ur system and then start working.. cheers....
