Configuring Kernel Parameters
 

Hi! I updated through yum everything including my kernel which was actually installed. It installed the 2.6.9-something kernel. Anyways, when I restarted my PC, I got this message "Configuring Kernel Parameters:". Everything I type appears on the screen. Any help?? And please give it in n00b talk as I am... well.... a newb! :D

Boot with the previous kernel, which I assume does not suffer from that problem. Then show your /etc/yum.conf -- as a n00b, where did you get a 2.6.9 kernel? From Fedora Core Development channel maybe? Further, what do you refer to? Fedora Core 2 or a test release? Please provide much more details.

Well, this happened to me with the previous kernel , so I reformatted and updated again, this time editing my grub.conf file to use the new 2.6.9...smp kernel. The same thing hapens so I do not think its the kernel. I am running Fedora Core 3 Test 3. My system used the yum.conf file it brings since the one in fedorafaq.org doesn't work. I can't access it, anyways...

Edit: Maybe it was some other file I updated. I updated everything.

This is an issue with using the binary nvidia drivers and the RedHat graphical boot.

You will get this problem if your xorg.conf is set to use the binary nvidia drivers and you update your Fedora Core.

As a soultion, press a in the GRUB bootloader and modify the kernal boot paramters to not use red hat graphical boot. Do this by removing the word rhgb and pressing enter.

Then edit your xorg.conf to use the open source 'nv' driver instead of the binary 'nvidia' driver.

Reboot and it will work.

I encountered the same problem, although resolving it was slightly different for me. Thanks very much for posting the reply as it put me "on the right track". I also got stuck at the "Configuring kernel parameters" line and the info you posted allowed me to boot up in text mode and alter the xorg.conf file until I was able to start the X server. I have an old Diamond Viper 330 video card in one machine and it has been problematic to configure it before. I did a complete fresh installation of FC3 on a machine that had FC2 installed previously. The answer for me was to alter the "Screen" section of the xorg.conf and include a number of Display sections with varying Depths. The configuration process did include the "nv" driver instead of the "nvidia" driver in my case although it says the card is a RIVA128 instead of the ET6000 which is what I think the actual chipset used is. Anyway, graphics is not my strongpoint and your posting helped me out considerably so thanks again.
