Compaq Armada M700 screen problem

Hi

Just installed FC4 on my laptop, and it all went very smoothly.

The only major gripe I have is that I can't configure my screen to anything bigger that 800x600.
It's picked up the ATI Mobility graphics card but the the screen is set to Generic CRT. I'm unable to select and store Generic LCD even (the OK button on the configure panel is always greyed out, even though I was prompted for the root pw).

I previously had trouble with Suse9.1 on this screen but FC4 seems at least to be able to put you in a mode where you can get a working system.

I really wanted to have a play with Eclipse with it's unusable in this resolution. Other apps don't fit properly either.

I know this is an old laptop but any help would be appreciated.

cheers

K

edit "XF86Config-4" or "xorg.conf" ................... add desired resolution.........if does not work......please list your "XF86Config-4" or "xorg.conf" contents in the forum.

Indeed, I have the same configuration and had the same problem. What I found is that I overlooked a setting choice on installation - probably because FC4 correctly detects the video driver, but NOT the display. There's a point where it actually asks you which display to use. After you've installed, you can go to (and I'm not in front of my machine so I'm doing this from memory so apologies for any mistakes):
- Desktop
- Preferences
- Display
- I believe that the second tab displays the video card and the monitor, click the button next to the monitor
- in the beginning of the list you should see 'standard LCD display', go into its subtree, and select 1024.
- Save, restart X (Ctrl-Alt-backspace) and you should be golden.

Let me know if this doesn't help and I'll take the time and get most correct info to you and some screenshots.

ctrl alt bkspace eh? never knew that.

I used the gnome desktop option but had a quick look at the xconf file too (just incase I ever get stuck in the console badlands).

many thanks
