cli command to connect to public AP returns activation failure

Been having problems with my fedora 22/gnome3 system wifi gui so thought to use nmcli commands to test.
Used nmcli conn show to validate the profile.
Then selected and AP and wifi adapter and attemted to nmcli connect up id "$AP" which is returning activation failed. Removed that profile rebuilt it and tried to bring up the connection and still getting activation failed.
Suggestions?

Report your problems to developers. It may be a bug or improvement to be made on something (or even in both nm* and Gnome 3).

Have you tried Mate Desktop? I never liked Gnome 3. Mate Desktop has both the logical arrangement of things, flexibility of use, and configurability - and G. 3 lost all of them, very important things to me.
