choosing what to update with yum

ok so I am using FC5, and using the yum command line client. Now, I want to update my system, but yum wants to update my kernal. I don't want it to update my kernel. So, how do I update everything except things that I might say, such as a new kernel. Is this even possible, or do I really need to use the GUI yum version

You can use the --exclude option with yum update to exclude specific packages by name
refer man yum

Code:
yum install yumex
Then you will have a graphical view of what is installed and
in need of updating and then you can choose to update what you
want updated.
