CDROM problems on FC4-64

A note of light exasperation, if I may; it is much easier to get constructive suggestions on the Debian forums than it is here. That said ...

Hardware: Plextor PX-716A CDROM, CDWriter, DVD, DVDWriter
OS: FC4-64

I'm having a series of problems with this CDROM, really unusual in my experience with Plextor. I think that other difficulties may clear up if I can get this first one solved.

Looging in as root solves all problems, so it's evidently a permissions issue.

If I log in as RegularUser, and insert an audio cd, the system freezes solid ... I have to power down.

The /etc/fstab file (evidently updated by HAL or 'fstab-sync') looks like this:
/dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

ls -l /dev/hdc ... returns this:
brw------- 1 RegularUser disk 22, 0 Sep 9 06:38 /dev/hdc
Logged in as root, it returns this:
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 22, 0 Sep 9 06:38 /dev/hdc

RegularUser IS a member of the 'disk' group, for what that's worth, although the login process seems to have set him up as 'owner' anyway.

When I log in as root, the audio cd immediately starts playing in gnome-cd. Why isn't that happening for RegularUser

Change "pamconsole, exec, noauto, managed" to "users"

How do I do that since that fstab line is generated by HAL or something. I didn't put it there.

I think there has to be a better way ... Will have to study on HAL & fstab-synch
