Hello all,
I'm fairly new to the Linux world and have come across an issue with the gnome-cd. When I attempt to play an audio CD it gives me a drive error. If I log on as root it works fine...any thoughts? It worked a couple days ago and I have changed nothing.
I am having a similar problem with my DVD burner. My software gives some sort of disk error and will not play either CD's or DVD's. However, files are visible when I check the drive.
If your suggestion will fix my problem where do I find "chmod a+r /dev/hdc"?
The commands I posted above, give all users permission to read files from the optical drive named /dev/hdc. The command has to be run as root in a terminal. If your optical drive is not /dev/hdc then you need to enter the right device name.
Thanks. The solution solved part of the problem. I can now play CD's. However, DVD's are still a mystery. The desktop icon labels the DVD disk as new and the software (Helix) hasn't a clue. Where do I go now?
You need to install a multimedia player like Xine (you can use kaffeine or totem as a frontend) or Mplayer. You then need to install libdvdcss. You can get these packages using yum or apt if you configure them to use the freshrpms or dag rpm repositories.
