CD Player
 

Nexbie question. I am almost at the point of no return (to Windows, that is!) but I am new to Linux and keep running into minor problems. My latest is that when I put in an audio CD , the player opens and seems to be running but without sound. I know my sound works because I copied one of the tracks as a single file and opened it and it worked. MPlayer, RealAudio do the same. They seem to be running with no sound.

Interesting. i just realized I have the same problem, I usually rip and encode all my CDs.

It may be a stupid problem, try the following.

1. Check the Volume control, there should be a seperate entry for CD - make sure that isn't muted.

2. Can you play music straight off of CD in a program in windows that is not Windows Media Player? There is a cable that goes from the back of your CD to the sound card, it's name escapes me as of now, but that might not be connected. If you feel prone to open up your computer and see if the cd drive has a third cable (Not the power or ribbon cable) coming out of it and plugged into the soundcard or motherboard.

If not, then I have the same question.

Yup, the volume is set ok. I can play the CD in Windows and I was using Linspire for a week and it worked. Maybe someone has an answer for us???

are you getting any sound at all in Linux - eg, playing wav files, or KDE startup sounds (unless you've disabled them like I have - just soooooo annoying!!)

Yes, sounds can be heard. I try "Test" and hear it very well. I can copy a song from a CD and then play it back ansd it works. Im just can't hear anything when the CD Player, Music Player etc are running.

re-reading the discussion in this thread, it would appear that CD playing was working for you with Linspire, but now it isn't. am i correct, or have you never had CD playing capability with Linux?

Can anyone help with this problem? I can't get the sound to play through the CD player. The sound card is fine.

It plays in Windows. This is one of the last difficulties. I got the DVD player working thanks to some great forum users as well as most of my other problems. This is a tough one.

ok,

the only thing here is to run off a check list; you may have tried all this already, in which case, sorry...

- check that your cd playing app really is pointing to the correct device, ie. /dev/dcrom or whatever. given that you state that the app appears to work but there's no sound, my hunch is that this is ok for you already.

- try cd playback using xine and let us know the results - xine uses digital audio extraction over the ide bus, rather than relying on the cd audio patch cable to the soundcard.

- double check that the cd input in the mixer app is enabled, not muted, and not set to 'minimum' - might sound obvious, but depending on your soundcard and which mixer app you're using, it can be tricky.. i've found the linux mixer apps can be confusing.

I have the same problem but I have usb-audio Soundblaster (I disabled onboard sound).
I can play wav files from hard drive but no CD sound or midi or mp3 (I think mp3's aren't supported in Fedora 2 due to licencing problem).
I have PC sound when errors are made but still no sound from any CD GUI (Kscd, Audio player). I also have Mandrake on another drive and this only works if I use Totem (starting manually - not the playback control gui bit). - Any ideas? No totem in Fedora! John Bonner

ok, glad you've got a positive result with xine - and good music taste!!! saw AC/DC live in birmingham here in the uk quite a long time ago - fantastic!!!

to make xine your default app will depend on which desktop environment you're using, and your distro. using SuSE and KDE, it's relatively simple, but i'm not familiar with fedora... you might want to search this forum a bit more and re-post if necessary..

however, given that cd audio works in xine but not cd playing apps - eg, kscd? i'd be tempted to lift the lid off the machine and double-check that there is an audio cable running from your cd drive to either your soundcard, or motherboard (ie, three cables - power, ide cable, audio cable). reason being that many linux cd-playing apps, such as kde's kscd or gnome cd player (whatever it's called..) absolutely require this cable, in contrast to windows, which uses digital audio extraction, like xine....

that said, xine works well, as do the ripping apps, such as grip, which don't need the cable - take your choice.

Thanks again for the help. I will go get that wire and connnect the CD. I never got to see AC/DC but recently got the chance to take my son to see Iron Maiden! He loved it and has become a Heavy Metal convert.

It is a pleasure to have such nice people as yourself on these forums. They have made my transition to Linux a good experience.

Another option is to use xmms instead of cd player. (I am referencing Fedora Core 2 in regards to the Gnome CD player.)

If you do this... in xmms just choose options->preferences->audio i/o plugin and click on cd audio player... click on configure and choose digital audio extraction to get digital sound instead of analog.

I hope this helps... I switch back and forth so I am always a newbie... so while I am here maybe someone can help me with this simple problem regarding the cd player. My problem is that fedora core2 defaults to cd player and this is very annoying since I have to shut it down every time (well it's only been 48 hours since I installed it) I put in an audio CD (which is rather seldom - but does occur).

Where do I configure which media player is associated with audio CD's. I've been in preferences but cannot seem to find anything. Is there a .conf file somewhere I can manually edit?

I have another problem but this one is a bit tougher. As I said I run Fedora Core 2 with Gnome. I have a SB Live... but mine came with a DELL. Now according to what I have found out alsa doesn't work with this specific SB Live card. So I have decided to install OSS which runs fine under XMMS and in certain programs. But in Gnome Desktop I don't have any sound. What I mean is for example if I want to associate a specific sound with me opening a window (which I probably won't do but it is just an example)... I cannot even "trial run" the sound in a dialog. I get no sound. But the same wav file for example plays with no problem via xmms. Is there a configuration somewhere that tells Gnome Desktop which driver to utilize and if so where is it and how do I change it.

This is partly true ... the decoder for mp3 via xmms isn't included just a placeholder is available...
So since I as many others would like to prevent you from going back to Microsoft here is a bit of help...

Remember you''ll need libmpg123.so. And after you install it disable the Placeholder Plugin under Audio I/O Plugins.

In case you didn't read the posting above I run FC2 with an SB Live using OSS drivers for sound.
