Having fun getting back into Linux and I have already added a couple of new drives to my machine and a few other tweaks.
My problem is rather annoying, I can hear sounds when I run the sound card test, the cdrom can be controlled from the screen and audio CDs correctly display their tracks and track lengths. In fact everything seems to work except when I play CDs I hear nothing.
I have set all the volume controls and un-muted everything but still nothing. The control panel for CDPlayer looks like it is working. The slider moves along the length of the track as if it is reading the CD.
This happens in both root and user mode.

Is there something obvious that I have to do that I could have missed. Using Gnome.
I have the same problem with DVDs as I have a dual CD R/W - DVD R drive.

I am sure I read in another thread somewhere that there has to be a physical cable between the cd rom drive and the soundcard for CD's to play. I just rip mine onto the hard disc then I can play them whenever I want.

AFAIK, with a dvd drive there is no such cable.

I use xmms to listen to audio cd's in a dvd rom drive. In preferences you select the Audi I/O Plugins tab. In input plugins you choose CD Audio Player. Click the configure button and in the device tab you select digital audio extraction.
