Canon i560 Printer install - via shell

Greetings all,

I have followed a previous thread on here:

.../hcl/showproduct.php/product/1881

I have downloaded said files to my fedora box.

However, i am not using a GUI, I'm using command line as this is a server i have configured for other things.

I have read the info at the top of this forum and noticed that my current server installation of Fedora Core 3 isn't supported, however, hopefully the exact distro shouldn't really come into play here when trying to get this printer to work. I do understand that if it does, that its not supported.

I'd like to know if there is a way that i can get this installed and setup as a shared printer on my network.

I'm not aware of any command line tools that i can use to complete this task, does anyone have any suggestions?

You can try using cups web based gui for the printer installation. I think it is port 631 you have to open. Don't quote me on that though.

thanks for that, i gave that a try. I've read that it does work, however for me it didnt.

Anyway, i've spent some time taking a look at this and found that "printcfg" command is what i needed. It allowed me to add a device via console, create a queue and select a driver.

Unfortunality i was unable to find a working driver to make it work, so nothing would print.

I have since just connected the printer directly to my laptop, i cant really think what else to try, considering canon offer no driver support.

I hope this works for you...

"In another forum I was told to configure the Canon i560s as a Canon BJC-7000 and use gimp-print.

All I did was (in redhat-config-printer) choose the BJC-7000 and the printer works fine."

This is from this forum.
