Cannot get Thunderbird 1.0.6 localized in nl-NL (FC4)

Summarized: I cannot get Thunderbird to show up in Dutch...

Just a week ago I installed Fedora Core for the first time. On a Pentium 3, 500 MHz. After increasing the memory size from 128 to 256 MB, the system started to run very smoothly.

While installed, I selected Dutch (nl-NL) as the locale. This turned out quite well: GNOME/Nautilus, OpenOffice and Firefox all show up in Dutch. But Thunderbird does not. It still has the English locale set and I cannot find a way to change it.

I already tried the following:
  • Install the official Dutch Thunderbird 1.0.6 from getthunderbird.com - Results in the error "error while loading shared libraries: libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
  • Copy the nl-NL.jar to the chrome/ directory and overwrite the chrome.rdf and installed-chrome.rdf files from the official Dutch Thunderbird Linux installation. - Result: Thunderbird shows a whole window full of errors at startup.
  • Copy the nl-NL.jar to the chrome/ directory and edit the chrome.rdf and installed-chrome.rdf files to replace en-US with nl-NL. - Result: Thunderbird shows just an empty window when starting up.
Any links or suggestions? This is a machine for my father-in-law who really does not speak English that well...
