Can't connect to the internet through my LAN... help?

Hi... I'm relatively new to Linux. I've briefly tried a few different distros (the last one I tried was SuSE), and not knowing what I was doing got me a crapload of viruses on my Win2k install.

Anyway, now knowing a teensy bit more about when and when NOT to be root I figured I would give Fedora a shot (suse was a bit too restrictive).

My computer is connected to my dsl modem thru my small home network.

I've tried using dhcp and entering my ip and dns info manually and the result is always the same... I can access my gateway but can't for the life of me connect to the internet... which sounds like a dns problem to me, but i've checked the reslolv.conf and everything's right.

I had a similar problem connecting to the internet in SuSE, but it turned out to be a simple DNS issue and I fixed the problem by following simple instructions on editing my resolv.conf and host.conf.

So if anyone has any idea how to help, that would rock. Thanks!

what did your resolv.conf look like?

also, go to a shell and ping www.linuxquestions.org....does it at least resolve to an IP?

Open a browser and go to http://64.179.4.149....does that bring up linuxquestions?

also, also, in the shell type route...is there a default line?

I personnally don't trust the Fedora "GUI" networking config as it has failed me in the past.

hmmm... well, that worked. I can ping the site, and I can get there by typing the ip into the browser.

If my dns servers are entered right, why can't I surf the net?

also, i type route in konsole and it says command not found (or something like that)

resolv.conf basically is this:

search domain.actdsltmp

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (my modem)
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (my isp)

Seriously... help...

So I'm getting to the internet, but can't surf because my dns isn't working right. This should be really simple but I'm too new to linux to figure it out.

somebody?

...help?!

Aw, screw it. I'm going back to suse, at least until I can learn more about linux

For some reason my router doesn't forward DNS properly, so I had to remove it from my resolv.conf and just use the DNS servers supplied by my ISP.

Thanks! I figured that out after I reinstalled suse 9.3. I was trying to use my router to forward DNS. So you're right, it wasn't linux, it was the router.

Thanks for the reply!
