Can't configure Wine

I have a Fedora Core 3 based distro and I installed the Wine and Wine-devel packeges from synaptic but I can't seem to get it to configure. I also tried the latest from winehq but I have the same problem. Others with the same distro and same packages from synaptic have no problems with it but mine dosn't even want to make the fake directories and I get this error. Anyone have any ideas?
Code:
[user@localhost ~]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost user]# wine
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine'...
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger...
wine: wineprefixcreate failed while creating '/root/.wine'.
[root@localhost user]# wineserver: could not save registry branch to /root/. wine-Yhok1Y/system.reg : No such file or directory
wineserver: could not save registry branch to /root/.wine-Yhok1Y/userdef.reg : N o such file or directory
wineserver: could not save registry branch to /root/.wine-Yhok1Y/user.reg : No s uch file or directory
[root@localhost user]#

Use a regular user (not "root" user) to configure wine.

Install Wine for Fedora using Documentation from http://winehq.org

Use "winecfg" first to configure.

Tried that. No go . It just does not want to go. Maybe one day, I won't need Windoz just to use it's API for a few programs

Yeah, thats what I'm doing now. Still, I'd like to ditch it tottaly eventually. I have absolutly no plans to but the new verson, whatever it is going to be called. Just recently, my registry got corrupted and now it won't start. The linux partition still works though. So my reasons are my own I guess. 2 yr ago, I would of defended windowz to the end, this is not the case anymore.

Wine

Use the latest rpm file you can find and use yum to install it. It will save you a lot of headaches. Or you can click when you download it to automatically install it.

Hello,

The only version i got to work with ie6 and firefox is wine-20050524. Newer ones just have not work after install.

I'm runing FC4 x86_64 system, of course wine is 32 bit.

WMP6.4 will play mms videos but I get no audio.

I use the windows version of firefox under wine on some sites such as http://news.yahoo.com/video

For some reason the native browsers on my computer won't load the video page.

wine

Go to http://kom.bluezones.org/wine/fc4/20050930/ They have rpm files for wine.
They are much easier to install.
