can't log in after yum update

Fedora 4 on athlon.
I foolishly typed "yum update" and clicked enter... and now I have a big mess:

First:- I can't log as my regular usre anymore (even if I boot to the previous Kernel). I can log in as Root but not as any other user. On the Graphical login it will tell me that cannot authenticate, if on a console I get no error messages other than it keeps asking me for name and password endlessly. I have successfully reset my password with "Passwd username" but I still can't log in.

Second:- x server will not start. I'm using the Nvidia Driver and I know it needs to create a module for each particular kernel version, but the source I was using is gone and I cannot just download it using yum... read on.

Third: Yum configuration is gone. I get a message telling me that the livna repsitory is not available. Can someone point me to a sample yum config that might get me back on track?

Sometimes when X is closed un-expectedly The X session files are unaccessable. Choose a failsafe terminal session and log in. Then as do "su -c chmod 755 .ICEauthority" you may also have to do a chown to change ownership.
