Can't get 1280x960 using ATI driver

I like FC5 a lot, but I this is killing me. Without the ATI driver, all the resolutions I can set in Administration->Display are available in Preferences->Screen Resolution, including my fav 1280x960. But direct rendering is not enabled and thus 3d acceleration is poor (glxgears ~= 220). With the ATI driver, 3d accel is there, GLX gears is ~= 2600, but a lot of the resolutions that are in Admin-Display aren't listed in the screen resolution selector. And xrandr doesn't list them either. I get 1280x1024, which screws up the aspect ratio. Is there a way to get better 3d without using the ATI driver? Or a way to force the ATI driver to specific resolutions? All the aticonfig app seems to do is write to the Xorg conf file. Which is not the problem, the resolutions are already there. Where does xandr get its resolutions from? The card is an X600XT on PCI-E.

Thanks,
G

Take a look at the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and see what it says about the 1280x960 resolutiuon.

It doesn't say anything about 1280x960, just 1280x1024. Here's the complete log

http://members.cox.net/gswood64/xorg-log.txt

But it's in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

http://members.cox.net/gswood64/xorg-conf.txt

Where else could available resolutions be coming from?

Thanks,
G

Is it using the monitors EDID info? And can I keep it from doing that? Cause the monitor displays 1280x960 just fine.

Have you tried editing your xorgconf and changing the mode to 1280x960. Dont forget to back it up.
Regards
