Can't connect to internet - eth0 not recognized
Hi,
I have a small home network on a DSL connection with a HUB between 2 computers, 1 running microsoft Windows ME, the other dual booting Fedora Core 2 and microsoft Windows XP Pro. When I start up the computer, and it checks for internet and eth0, it fails, and I can't connect to the internet, but I can on XP. What can I do:confused: Thanks, Nathan |

Kind of having the same problem
I am also getting the same problem at boot. Eth0 failed: no link present, Check cable? I look around and found this solution. I was told to do (ifconfig eth0 up) follow by (ifup eth0) cool and it works my internet is up, but I don't have a idea what I just did. Also I have to do this all the time if I want to connect to the internet so can someone help me solve my problem?

idiot check
Ok, hang on.
You're sharing a single, adsl link between two computers with a hub? If that's the case, then this is a simple case of user error, not linux (or even windows, believe it or not). A hub does not do any NAT or other routing functions. You'll need two IP addresses from your ISP if you want to run two connections from that hub. So either call your ISP and tell them you want to purchase a second IP address, or go to Best Buy and drop $30 on a router which will then take your WAN IP and split it into multiple LAN IPs. Trying to share one IP address with a hub is like trying to share a toy between two kids: One of them ends up empty handed, crying, and with a dirty diaper. Or something. Good luck. |
Nope I am using a switch. Can you explain to me first what I am doing when I do (ifconfig eth0 up) and (ifup eth0) how come it works after I do this?
