Can't change the window manager / desktop environments

I have also posted this elsewhere but haven't any reply so far, so I thought trying here wouldn't hurt!

I use Fedora LXDE and have installed a couple of additional window managers (Qt Razor and Cinnamon) that were not included in the initial installation.

When I logout I can see both of them in the list of available window managers. If, however, I select Razor or Cinnamon and login I get the LXDE environment instead of Razor/Cinnamon!! This doesn't happen with the window managers installed by default (KDE and Gnome for example) so I guess I have to find some configuration file(s) and update it

Any ideas?

This is a shot in the dark, since I don't use that environment, but I remember that in Ubuntu I would have to enter my login name (but not my password) to change the environment. Where in the login process are you when you make the selection?

Also, I found this thread, but you may have already found it: http://ask.fedoraproject.org/questio...ktop-to-log-in

Hi Frankbell and thank you for your interest!

The weird thing is that I have the menu for changing between KDE, Cinnamon, etc! The problem is that even if I select Cinnamon for example, I get LXDE! The only options working properly are KDE, LXDE and Sugar.

Thank you for the link you sent me to that other question. I was kind of confused though (unfortunately I'm not a Linux expert yet)... They are talking about display managers and I don't know how window managers are related to desktop environments (like Gnome, KDE, LXDE, etc).

Display managers are the graphical login programs that ask you for your user name and password and allow you to choose your desktop environment/window manager. Fedora uses the GDM (Gnome Display Manager) by default. KDM is the KDE display manager. There are some others out there, but those are the two biggies.

I prefer to log in at the command line and then start the graphical environment with the "startx" command, primarily because, if I just want to do terminal stuff when I log in, I don't want to have to mess with a GUI to get it done. Plus I like being contrary.

I have a sense that the problem you are facing somehow involves the GDM configuration and that, in some way, Cinnamon did not get properly entered in GDM, but I don't know enough about GDM's innards to offer any troubleshooting hints.

Thanks for the helpful explanations Frankbell!

I think I'm not using GDM because I installed the Fedora LXDE spin. I guess I'm using LXDM because in my /etc/sysconfig/desktop file I have a line saying "DISPLAYMANAGER=/usr/bin/lxdm". It could be a problem in LXDM's configuration then...

The Fedora--LXDE site confirms your deduction. Nice detective work.

You could try man lxdm in a terminal. In case you can't find the man page on your system, here's a link to Ubuntu's web rendering of it.

So can I use another display manager with LXDE? Or should I just wait till the bug is solved?

I just installed gdm and used it as my display manager... I could load Razor and I admit it's more fancy than LXDE! I don't know if it's as fast...

My problem with Cinnamon, however, is still there! After selecting it from the list of Desktop Environments it tried to load it but crashed and returned to GDM... Next time I'll also post the error message from SELinux

PS: GDM is really slooooow compared to LXDM!
