Booting from diskette

Just days since using linux.
I am using FC5 and I am trying to make a bootable diskette and cd.
However, when booting with the first diskette in the drive, which contains the kernel, grub stage 1 & 2, I get the error, filesystem type unknown, partition type
cannot mount selected partition. When booting from the cd its same thing.
Ny suggestons would be grateful, thanks.

I suspect the kernel does not have the ability to read the filesystems you use on your floppy (FAT or ext2?) or CD (ISO9660). You must either compile the respective filesystem into the kernel, or provide it as a module on an initial ram disk (initrd) that the kernel is instructed to load at boot time.

I made sure of that. I am suspecting it has something to do with the grub.conf file

I don't know if I will be able to help you with this or not, but for anybody to help, it would be useful if you would post the grub.conf files you are using.
