Boot into / start in INIT 3

I am trying to install the Nvidia driver and I have to get to a terminal in
INIT 3. I have tried following ways of accomplish this:

* Open a terminal in Gnome, su to root and execute init 3 ... NOTHING HAPPENS

* Log out from Gnome, click "Session" and choose "Failsafe Terminal" ... BUT THEN I'M NOT IN INIT 3 ... X-SERVER IS STILL RUNNING

* Same as above but give a init 3-command at the terminal prompt ... NOTHING HAPPENS

How do I get into init 3 ????

edit /etc/inintab and chage the runlevel to 3 there

x1:4:wait:/etc/rc.d/rc.4

change the 4 to 3. Save it than do an init 6 a root to reboot

or if you're just needing to do it once, type "linux single" at bootup

Howzit

Try login into a terminal by using Ctrl-Alt-F1 then type at the prompt init 3 this will reboot system into text mode and this is not a permant change meaning u donīt have to edit any files.
