boot freezes

hi

im trying to install linux on my old gateway pc
700mhz athlon
256mb sd memory
nvidia tnt2

I've tried both FC3 and FC4, it will install, but when i restart it fails to load..
i get

Booting 'Fedora Core (2.6.11-1.1369-FC4)'

root (hd0,0)
filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1e00, size=0x18e473]
initrd /initrd-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.img
[Linux-initrd @ 0xfe2f000, 0x1a0b64 bytes]

at which point i have the flashing input thingy

it doesnt go further than this, it doesnt reboot, it just sits here.

I have tried a seperate hard disk, FC3,4 and red hat 8
none will boot.
(also windows xp installs, runs fine on both hdd on this system, fully 100% stable ... or at least as stable as windows gets...)

i used the auto partition and auto generated boot configuration

It is freezing up at the point of"Uncompressing the kernel"
As I read you do have WindowsXP installed on front of first harddrive, are you trying to put linux on same drive
or separate drive ?
You do know if your putting it on drive with XP you have to resize the XP partition to be on front part of drive and Linux
will install on back part of drive. I'm just asking this question to find out where you are, your trying to install or running
first boot after install.

You say you have already installed and this happens when you reboot?

Reboot, when the blue screen comes up showing kernel # hit enter and then hit on your keyboard the letter a , another
screen will come up to allow you to type in "noapci" and hit enter and then it will go onto boot.
It is something that Linux has problems with your computer

Guys u got it all wrong.....
mickeyboa i guess it was an unintended typo.

the option is actually 'noapic' and not 'noapci'
but i guess it has nothing to do with this problem.....
maybe it is 'acpi=off'.......this may steer clear of any power management if it exists.

thx for any help guys (if it works or not)

noapic and noacpi=off isnt working

does anyone know if mandrake parses different parameters to kernel on first boot?
because that would explain why mandrake booted only once, and i may be able to get fedora/mandrake to run with that setup

On reading the problem more leisurely I probably think your boot loader configuration file points to a wrong or non-existent RAM disk (option initrd=), since it hangs at that stage. Is the 'root=' entry pointing to the correct partition. Your system seems to use LVM. Double check the entry.

You can also try booting the system manually step-by-step. Go to the grub command-line

1)specify the root device partition.

2)specify the kernel to load with exact options.

3)specify the initrd image to load.

4) type 'boot'

This will most probably work if the boot loader config is the culprit.........

BTW if u want the steps verbatim plz ask, but it is generally good that u learn them now yourself.this is a god-sent oppurtunity.
