Blocking Specific IP Addresses

Hi there --

I need to set up a means to block a specific ip address from trying to hack into our system. My plan is to use iptables to accomplish this task. My question, what would the correct syntax be in the configuration file. Also, if iptables is not the way to go, what is a better method? Thanks.
