Best book?
 

Hi, I want to Install Fedora Core 3 and would like to get a book. I'm not new to Linux; I have run it before. I can't decide on what get: Red Hat Fedora Linux 3 Bible or the Red Hat Fedora 3 Unleashed. Which is better?

Red Hat Fedora 3 Unleashed would be the one to get.

I have got the two books in previous versions , RH 9 Bible and Red Hat Fedora unleashed , both are good books , but they seem to be sort of like six of one and half a dozen of the other in which the RH Fedora Linux Bible has more GUI related stuff , while the Fedora Unleashed has a bit more stuff relating to the command line .

If you have been using Linux , then the RH Fedora 3 Unleashed is perhaps the one that you want as it seems to have more detail on a lot of things.

Also another good book to get is Linux In A Nutshell , published by O'Reilly , it's a reference book that has all the commands needed for the command line.

Excellent book I agree bought it myself well worth it.

You guys sure? Amazon has awesome reviews for the Bible and poor reviews for the Unleashed book.

I'll add to the choice of the Unleashed book. I was contemplating getting it myself. I've also got the RH9 Bible and Unleashed books. I find the Unleashed book more useful. I read and continue to use Running Linux, it's not RH or Fedora but useful.

I find that I use tldp.org and man pages quite a bit more than when I first started my Linux adventure. Not to mention the sites for the various packages, they usually address current issues better than any book can. There is also, of course, useful information to be found on the fedora.redhat.org site.

Well, one review said it didn't mention lvm or SELinux and neither Amazon or BN have a toc or index. The Sams Publishing site has a table of contents and in it I find Logical Volume management but not SELinux and no index. I may not yet get the FC3 version as I have the RH9 book. I still think that if you are without any RH or Fedora book, this is the one to get.

It probably all comes down to what you are looking for in a book and what the person on Amazon was looking for in a linux book , maybe he reviewed the book from the point of view of a newibie .

As I have said , the 2 books are like six of one and half a dozen of the other , in which some things are covered in detail in one book and not the other , or that there is more text based content in one book and more GUI content in the other.

I have found both books useful , what I can't find in one , then I find in the other.

But generally , if you are serious about learning Linux , then you will need to learn and understand the linux stuff from the command line as well as using the GUI interface.
