Avahi-daemon on startup
Hello :)
I'm trying to make my startup sequence quicker and more efficient, and one of the things I noticed is that in FC5 (unlike FC3), this sequence includes the service "avahi-daemon".
Searching the Internet and this site, I couldn't exactly understand what this daemon does, but I got the impression that it has something to do with Apple computers (which I don't own) and servers (which I do not run).
How do I know whether I can stop this service and take it off my startup scripts?

Thank you,
O.R. :)

From the Debian website:

Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD daemon

Avahi is a fully LGPL framework for Multicast DNS Service Discovery. It allows programs to publish and discover services and hosts running on a local network with no specific configuration. For example you can plug into a network and instantly find printers to print to, files to look at and people to talk to.

This package contains the Avahi Daemon which represents your machine on the network and allows other applications to publish and resolve mDNS/DNS-SD records.
