when i first plugged in my camera, it automatically mounted it, and put an icon on my desktop. after unmounting i deleted the icon, and now it will not auto mount anymore... is there a way to re enable this feature?

What windowmanager are you using, KDE/Gnome? Under KDE you can simply right-click, create new link to device, and point it to your camera. I can't remember about Gnome off the top of my head but is something similar. This way, you simply click the icon to mount the camera whilst plugged in as you would have originally.
