I have the same problem, but I believe the soundcard is not fully compatible with Linux. Couldn't get any sound at all prior to kernel 2.6.11. Now I get sound but the volume is either on or off.
I solved this by buying a gadget to switch between headset and speaker, with a built in hardware volume control.
