Audio works, can't adjust volume

The main volume & volume on XMMS, XINE, MPLAYER, etc do not adjust the volume.

The volume stays constant.

Is this an arts issue or something else?

What distro do you use?

What kernel are you running?

Are you using ALSA as your sound system/ OSS?

Can you plz be more specific?

I use Fedora Core 4 with the latest kernel.
I have alsa running.

I have the same problem, but I believe the soundcard is not fully compatible with Linux. Couldn't get any sound at all prior to kernel 2.6.11. Now I get sound but the volume is either on or off.

I solved this by buying a gadget to switch between headset and speaker, with a built in hardware volume control.
