i have that problem. run sound card detection under system settings and play the test sound. i have to do this everytime i reboot. i havent had time to look into completely fixing it. kinda annoying. at least you dont have to reboot everyday with linux. you have to restart the program you want sound from after you do this.

just wondering does your card use the snd-intel8x0 module?

If the module of your card is loaded (lsmod), try "alsaconf" then "alsamixer" and turn on both headphone and PCM,
I had the same problem and I fixed it
Good luck
