Solved!

Thanks for everyone who replied!

At first, I just copied the "cat" output of PTrenholme post
into a newly created file

/etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service

but then it occured to me to look better in the directory

/usr/lib/systemd/system

to which few "*.service" links are pointing and I saw "gdm.service"
and "kdm.service" files. So I removed the created file, did a link

Code:

cd /etc/systemd/system
ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm.service display-manager.service

rebooted ... and now I have the KDE graphical login.

To paraphraze "THHGTTG":

"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers
exactly what the Fedora boot sequence is for and why it is here, it will
instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more
bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already
happened."

:-)

That isn't a theory - it's an AXIOM! And it holds for the startup sequence, and the netwotk logon sequence. I have fedora 18 here, and can't even find how to set the keyboard locale in gnome.

Yes, more often than Dr Who has reincarnated

I believe that that's not an axion, but, rather, a corollary to the basic purpose of Fedora as a testing platform for possible "improvements" to the Red Hat commercially supported offerings.

As to setting the language, look at man locale for a description of various environment variables used to control language settings, and man localedef and man localectl for how those settings may be changed. (If you want to jump in before reading, localectl --help might be a good place to start.) And, if your typing skills are like my skills, note that those command all start with locale, not local. :)

I won't prolong this debate. I am most uncomfortable running a testing platform because many tests fail :-/. I tolerate fedora purely because they have an electronic spin, which has collected and compiled some of the most obnoxious programs to shoehorn into a system which happen to be useful to an electronics guy. I'm not a Red Hat fan, as you may gather.
