ASDL Modem Working but no internet access

Hi all,

I am very new to the linux world having tried to get involved a few times before I have decided to make a concerted effort so I have downloaded the Fedora2 Distribution and some other distributions.

I have installed it and have it running fine on my PC which is a windows XP machine now partitioned so I can dual boot Fedora2 or WinXP. That side of it is fine.

The thing is I want to setup my ASDL modem so I can connect to the internet and this is where the pain starts.

I have the "Sagem F@ast 800 E2T (chipset)" USB ASDL Modem I am a subscriber to Tiscali broadband in the UK.

Seems people have no end of trouble trying to get this modem installed, but after days of work I have it installed and both lights the power and asdl light are on when I look at the modem.

I have a script that I run called startasdl that seems to start the connection because if I try to run it again I am informed that the connection is already started.

Only thing is I cant browse the internet or anything like that as the browser fails straight away when I try to browse to a site.

How do I know if the modem is really working and its some other setting I havent got right? What tools do I use what steps do I need to follow to troubleshoot this issue?

There isnt an rpm for this modem I downloaded a tar file which had instructions for making and installing the driver, according to all the docoumentations ive read I have passed the biggest hurdles by getting both modem lights in the on state.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a DNS server set up? Go to System Settings > Network and the DNS tab. Find out your DNS servers, and put them in there.

If you don't know what yours are, put in 64.19.9.33 and try it. It's located far from you, so you should still try to find your own for better speed.

Replies to queries

First thanks to all who have replied.

Im very keen to use a linux distribution on a day to day basis and would love to get this working.

1. I have both primary and secondary DNS setup and that hasnt given me any joy, is there a setting somewhere that needs to be set to use the DNS's I have provided.

2. The driver Mandrake provides is for the eagle 1 chipset on the Sagem 800 F@st modem it recognises my modem but cant initialise it. I think club members have access to a test rpm for mandrake 10.0 for the eagle 2 chipset of the same modem but im not paying $100+ for an rpm that may not fix my problem. Id happily pay Mandrake the money if they can guarntee I could connect to the internet with this modem.

3. Tiscali the provider here supports PPPoA. I dont really understand the PPPoE and PPPoA thing other than that PPPoA is what everything I have read about Tiscali UK and the Sagem modem points to.

thanks again.

Any more questions?

i had similar problem with alcatel usb modem . Check you have file /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and that they have something like nameserver 123.4.5.65
nameserver 123.4.5.66 . If you dont have these files just create them with text editor and get details from your service provider support page. Good luck
