apt / synaptic doesn't work on new kernel

Installed rpms:
apt 0:0.5.15cnc6-0.fdr.11.2
synaptic 0:0.51-0.fdr.1.2

on Fedora2
kernel 2.6.5-1.358 then updated to kernel 2.6.8-1.521

synaptic doesn't work now. It asks for root password then program doesn't run. Still works on old kernel. Do I have to re-install apt and synaptic rpms on new kernel?

[tim@host tim]$ ls apt*
apt-0.5.15cnc6-1.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm
[tim@host tim]$ ls syn*
synaptic-0.52-1.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm

[tim@host tim]$ rpm -q apt
apt-0.5.15cnc6-0.fdr.11.2
[tim@host tim]$ rpm -q synaptic
synaptic-0.51-0.fdr.1.2
[tim@host tim]$

I uninstalled (erased) both apt and synaptic. (rpm -e filename)
Then re-downloaded both and reinstalled both (rpm -ivh filename)

Everything is working again and back to normal.
