apt repositories

HI,
I using FC4 with apt/synaptic.
What repositories to you use?

I am using http://ayo.freshrpms.net/ and http://apt.sw.be/ but I am not pleased. It seems that they are not updated in an acceptable amout of time. ex: also firefox 1.5.01 is there, they still have only firefox-1.0.7 and Thunderbird the same version.

Whould it be better to use yum?

First of all, Apt is not recommended for Fedora Core, and many places don't support it anymore; you would be better off with Yum, which is much better supported.

The ones you listed are the Freshrpms and Dag repositories. You are also probably using the standard Fedora Core repos. That is fine; you can use them if you personally like.

Packages in Fedora Core go through a testing process before they are released. In general, packages in Fedora Core are very well updated. Packages for Firefox and Thunderbird 1.5 are not yet released; and there is probably a reason (they are still working out problems and compatibility issues, etc.). You can get the newest versions from the development repo, but you probably shouldn't. If you search these forums, you can find other ways and places to get Firefox and Thunderbird 1.5 in FC4 if you want. I'm still using 1.0.7 and I'd rather wait for it.

I know that apt/synaptic comes from Debian and is not the preferred method for updating FC. But yum has no graphical interface (at least 6 month ago when I installed FC4). Maybe I will use it with FC5.

I don't thing it is good idea not to use the latest stable version of the software. There are a lot of bugs and patches for those bugs...
This is principle of a DAC (discretionary access control) OS. Vulnerability->Patch Released-> Patch Installed and so on.

So there is Yum Extender (yum install yumex), but it is not as good as the command line. FC5 will come with a better GUI.

So I think all security bugs are fixed very quickly in Fedora Core packages, but packages for new versions of software take a long time to integrate with other stuff in the distro. It's the same idea as why Debian testing doesn't have the newest versions of stuff, for example.
