apps keep crashing

Hi,

I have this weird problem. some of the apps like gnome-system-monitor, gnome-power-preferences, nm-applet(when clicked on edit connections) keep crashing.

the moment I log in into my gnome desktop, all the apps work fine for a minute. the problem starts after a while say 5 mins... I will not be able to run any of these apps. I always get the crash window.

Iam using fedora 11 on a toshiba satellite m200. this problem has been there for a long time now. initially I thought that software updates will make it ok. but even after several updates, the apps keep crashing.

is there a way to fix this?. everytime I need to access them, I need to logout and login and then acces them quickly before they start to crash. this is quite time consuming and irritating.

thanks in advance.

can you post the error
when you run the" apps?" from the terminal .

and what is in your logs about this ?
/var/log/????
messages,Xorg.0.log,dmesg,

When was the last time that you physically cleaned (canned air works good) out the laptop? The five minute lag sounds like a heat issue to me.

hi john,

following the output I get when I run from terminal..

[output]
[WARN 19010] polkit-error.c:143:polkit_error_get_error_message(): error != NULL
Not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace

** (gnome-system-monitor:19010): WARNING **: Failed to initialize PolicyKit context: (null)
[WARN 19010] polkit-error.c:156:polkit_error_free(): error != NULL
Not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace
69d35af4-c5fc-a3f2-52dde3b4-10891a48 is dumped
[/output]

there is no entry of the error in /var/log/messages.

could it be that there is some service that gets started which causes the problem.

hi lazlow,

I dont think that cud be the reason because the apps work momentarily when I login. if I logout and login even when the laptop is turned on for almost a day, the apps work but only for a few minutes.

thanks for the replies. looking forward to sorting this out. :)

from the errors
do you have any errors or warnings in " SELinux TroubleShooter "
/Applications / System Tools / SELinux TroubleShooter

I have disabled SELinux . I never understood its use anyway.. I disabled it because I thought it might make the system faster.

however, I have clicked on the SE trouble shooter but I was not diplayed any window. what is the terminal command for this.

thanks.

Hi,

I was finally able to simulate this error. THe problem occurs when I access my windows partitions which are all in ntfs. the moment I access them the mentioned apps crash after that.

To know if this is the one causing the problem, after the apps crash, I unmounted all the windows partitions and then clicked on the apps icons and all of them worked just fine.

Any ways to fix them? I am going to perform a thorough disk check on the windows partitions and check again after that.

I really dont see the relation between file system errors and the apps crash but somehow they are related.

Assuming that the windows partitions are NTFS, which NTFS driver are you using and where did you get it from? Last I checked (it has been a while) NTFS support was only available from 3rd party repos.

hi lazlow,

I don't remember installing any ntfs drivers for fedora 11. I think it comes with its own set of ntfs drivers now.

lazlow 09-03-2009 11:18 AM

See if you have these two installed:

Quote:

ntfs-config-1.0.1-6.fc11.x86_64.rpm
ntfs-3g-2009.4.4-1.fc11.x86_64.rpm
If you are using 32bit you will of course need the 32bit versions. They are both from the Fedora (proper) repo. If you do not have them installed, do so and see if that clears the issue.

John VV 09-03-2009 12:54 PM

the ntfs-3g program is in fedora by default . it should be auto installed
arunvk by chance is this fedora 11 install an " upgrade" from fedora 10 , as in did you do a FRESH install or use upgrade ?

arunvk 09-03-2009 07:26 PM

the following packages are installed for ntfs :-

ntfsprogs-2.0.0-10.fc11.i586
ntfs-3g-2009.4.4-1.fc11.i586

I did a fresh install.

lazlow 09-03-2009 07:29 PM

Did that clear up the issue?

arunvk 09-04-2009 12:11 AM

no the problem is still there even after a complete disk check.

lazlow 09-04-2009 12:28 AM

Do you have beagle running? If so shut it off and see if that helps. Googling showed a few reports of beagle conflicts spitting out errors like this.
