LinuxQuestions.org - apart from grub fedora 2 is the best linux distro

Hi,

As I have previously ranted (and been justified in ranting) about grub I would just like to say that apart from that Linux Fedora 2 is the best linux distro I have seen so far. It has innovative new features and if it keeps getting worked on , it is going to be a good operating system.

I also would like to say that I have used solaris for 1 and a half years and although I like the cde enviroment and its general O/S folder structure, I think the various documentation from sun microsystems and others is full of unecessary techno-babble and complexitys that could be avoided the use of clear and consisely written steps. In respect to fedora & redhat, I have found there to be an abundance of documentation. The various articles I have read have been (for the most part) well written and in a format that most poeple could understand. (with a bit of work :-) ). Also the amount of software available is excellent, anyway I hope that linux keeps heading in this direction.

One thing that I have been wandering about though is in reference to compiling source code, the thing is what is the best method for backing it up?

Ideally I was wandering if there was a way to get your installed source code into a rpm package so say when you formattted you could re-install your compiled source with rpm -ivh *
Also there is the problem with dependancies............ so is there anyway to make an rpm up with the installed src app which would include all its dependancies.

I have been using yum to get dependancies. Anyway I suppose in general Im asking what is the best method for making backups of programs youve maybe worked weeks at to get setup? Its just for a while there I was getting a new thing installed then learning about a new app then mucking the install up and having to re-install the whole linux O/S :-)

Any suggestions/Advice would be appreciated
