Anyone using Audacity-1.3.2-17.fc8?
Hullo,
I have just started experimenting with Audacity, attempting to put old vinyl on CD. I initially put the stable version 1.2.6 for Windows on a laptop as it was easier for initial experiments, and that worked OK.
I then asked yum to find a version for Fedora 8 for my Linux box and ended up with v1.3.2, which has caused no end of trouble.
I can record from the turntable and playback at the same time and it all sounds OK, but when not recording, any playback of a recording is just static...dreadful noises.
I can take a wav file recorded on the laptop and import that and it plays OK, so suspected something might be wrong with my sound card. I have had it out, checked all connections etc, and it looks OK.
Anyone had similar problems...that sort of info would help point to the culprit.
Cheers,

What i did is i converted an audio cassette to wav , the only sound was the hiss. which i was able to mostly get rid of , by the filters.
i think you here some low sound beeps , some long some short beeps , and diffrent sounds.
When you use the mouse scroll you can hear mild beeps , if this is your case , then i am only having it when i plug in the jack and nothing plays.
I hear some stray noise , like i told above.
But there was no problem with the cassette to wav

OK, thanks for that feedback.
I really think that audacity 1.3.2-17.fc8 is a bit broken in the way it handles my soundcard. I did another test, installed v1.2.6 in the Win2000 partition and ran that. It works perfectly, so it would seem that nothing is wrong with my sound card.
All we need now is a 1.2.6 version for Fedora 8, but I guess that isn't going to happen.
Thanks for your help.

I think you have got some channels unnecessarily on, like the line in and the mic are on simultaneously , or like that.
Mute all the channels which you dont need from kmix.

I suspect it isn't something like that, but I'll certainly try it.
As I said, it sounds really good during record, but playback is rubbish.
What's kmix? Is that some KDE tool? I am using gnome, and will see what tools it has to do as you suggested.
Thanks for your help,
Cheers,

[QUOTE][I think you have got some channels unnecessarily on, like the line in and the mic are on simultaneously , or like that.

I have played around for quite a while with various options, including the channels and the playback and record drivers in Audacity. There are so many combinations that i can't be sure that I have tried all possabilities yet, but have managed to make an improvement. Playback is now pretty much as it should be, but now find that recording drops out every now and then for a few seconds, using 1.3.2 in Fedora 8. That has never happened using 1.2.6 under Win2000P.
I think I will have to give up on trying to get reliable results from 1.3.2, and record using Windows and 1.2.6. I just can't afford the time playing around trying to find if there is a solution.
I have found that 1.3.2 in Fedora is quite solid editing a file that has been captured by 1.2.6, but don't fall for the trap of saving as a project, as 1.3.2 makes a hash of importing it. Export as WAV.
I guess that just about does it for me on this question. Thanks to all who replied.
