After login, I see only curson over dark screen

I recently was given a Linux box and installed Fedora 10 on it (two days ago). I ran "yum update" and that succeeded (though it took several hours to download and process the packages).

Everything was going nicely--that is, I could issue commands in xterms and access FireFox, etc.--until this morning when I powered it up. The login screen comes up, but the little "I'm processing stuff" circle continues to spin.

Then, when I log in, it switches to a dark screen with nothing but my cursor arrow visible, and the machine continues to hum away as if trying to load stuff.

Might this be a monitor issue? I would guess it is except that the cursor is there (and I can move it).

Given that I have only a cursor, is there anything diagnostic or remedial I can do? Is it worth hooking up a different monitor?

Quick update to my post:

I switched over to a different monitor, with the same results. The only difference is that with the new monitor, which is larger, I see the little blue "I'm still processing" circle spinning under the cursor. (What's the official name for that spinning circle?)

So I think this is not a monitor issue.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

Sorry that I can't assist with your inquiry, but
I'll put the thread in the Fedora forum for better
(and more targeted) exposure.

I found the following response to the same issue on another site:

Try to shut down the X server with ctrl+alt+backspace, this should bring you back to console.

Then try

yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

This will install all the dependencies you could miss with the current setup, e.g. missing gnome-session package?!?

//edit: if it will not let you to kill X go ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to the second console and login as root.

I ran "yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment", but it failed/aborted like so:

[root@wwilliams ~]]# yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
fedora | 2.8 kB
updates | 2.3 kB
Setting up Group Process
python: Modules/gcmodule.c:241: update_refs: Assertion 'gc->gc.gc_refs == (-3)'

Any idea why this would fail and what I might try next?
