ADD/REMOVE software error on Fedora Core 5 GNOME
Hi,
I have a linux Windows dual boot. Windows is on /hda and Fedora Core 5 is installed on /hdb. I had to manually set my partition sizes for Fedora Core 5 about 2GB for my root partition and a little less for my boot partition, 384 MB for my swap partition. I have 488MB of ram. I am sorry I do not remember any other information off hand. The sum of my problem is that in Fedora Core 5 on the GUI. I cannot choose add/remove software in Gnome. It just says Error getting information then cuts out. Im starting to wonder if this is a glitch only because I do have another computer that has Fedora Core 5 and I can do add/remove software. |
Curious: Can this computer properly connect to the internet?

requested information on this issue
Hi,
Yes it can connect to the net, I am pretty sure. I have not since my install. If theres an update availble to correct this, it would be nice if theres a rpm I can download to usb disk or gzipped tarball. It just rather confuses me why this is a problem. My computer is located where there is no internet connection availble. Im starting to guess this is a glitch with Fedora Core 5. Because my other computer with Fedora 5 on it as a standalone computer with one OS. Has updates and it works with Add/remove. I have been experimenting around with linux and am now getting rather serious into pursuing it b/c Fedora Core seems rather stable and I like the fact that the programs available are similiar to those of Windows, as its progressed to replace windows. It just needs to somehow be publicized more. That is once it gets past these minute glitches. |

It's not that you need an update to correct it.
It's that the default setting of add remove only works when you're connected to the net. |

Decrepit,
When I installed FC5 I only installed default packages. Would I need to boot of the dvd to install say PostgresSQL. IE there are packages on the dvd I did not chose on my install that I would like. |
FC5 uses yum as the backend for software management. You dont need to boot the dvd to add/remove software on the dvd. Add/remove program (Pirut) uses yum & it doesn't allow you to install from dvd without some tweaks. This has been stated as common problem in fedora website . See Installation & package Management section at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC5Common . This link https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla...?id=188750#c17 provides for a work-around though it states for fc6 it also works for fc5.

thanks--my thoughts for future improvment
OK thank you. I just do find it weird that Add/remove only works for updates not programs which you unchecked upon install.
For instance on install I only chose defaults. Say I want to get postgresSQL or KDE development. I should be able to put my dvd in and choose add/remove from dvd only not the internet, but thats not available. |
Correction it is possible from the DVD, but as ashwin cse says, you have to tweak the yum repos, I assume his links tell you how.
Basically you have to change the base repo to point to your DVD drive instead of the internet. It's been detailed on here a few times, if you need more than ashwin cse's links, try searching this forum for "install programs from DVD". |
