Does your machine support ACPI?

I'm no expert on ACPI but I may be able to help a little...

How old is the PC? Does it support ACPI? Even if it does, I've found it to be a bit variable - I have one PC which will run with ACPI enabled under some distros (Ubuntu, Knopix - both Debian based) but not under Mandrake or SuSE (haven't tried Fedora on that one).

Try adding acpi=off to the kernel boot parameters and see if it boots OK. If you need help with this let us know and I or someone here will post a more detailed howto I'm sure.

Cheers

Haven't installed Ubuntu from the Live CD (I always use the "Alternative" one because the installer is more flexible. With most live CDs you get the option to type kernel parameters when they first boot - not sure if this applies to the Ubuntu one. If it does, you'd probably type something like "linux acpi=off" at the boot prompt. Someone who's used the live CD can probably give better advice.

I have at least 3 linux installations probably more that I get that message on.
One of them is on a brand new machine
It doesn't cause any problems, Always wondered what it meant.
So what is ACPI and RSDP????

Hmmm... The Xubuntu Alternative CD worked in my case. It was just the Desktop CD that didn't. I now have a functional Xubuntu installation.

UBUNTU install

I just installed UBUNTU (Alternate text mode install)on a PII 233MHZ with 128M of RAM and what it took was to verify the CD 1st. I found that CD/RWs just wouldn't pass (even though they verified against the ISO when created), resulting in the system locking up during the install. Once I copied it to a CDR, verified the CD using the option in the start page, it installed just fine. Just took a few hours to complete. Once installed, the ACPI/RSDP error didn't go away and I can't get past the login. It just keeps returning to the login screen.

I would still like to know what the acronyms stand for.
