accessing CompactFlash drives at boot up

I am relatively new to the Linux world. I've been asked to work this project that has embedded Linux (Fedora 2.6.13.3 - adeos-r13). They use CompactFlash cards as the method of "transfering" the embedded app to the system. It is also used as the method to get grub started.

Now my problem... It seems that during this process, I lose contact with the Flash card. That is to say, I begin with the Fdisk. Then next step, as I understand it, is to set up the disk with the right FS... thus Mke2fs. However, Mke2fs cannot find the Newly "formatted" disk. I can "stat" it, I can "fdisk -l" it, I just can't get the mke2fs to do its thing.

To complicate things a tad more, during the past couple of days, while working on this, I've been able to get it to work twice. However, it would really be nice to get a setup with a tad more consistency.

thanks in advance for any assistance,

Mitch

OK - show us the fdisk -l output for these cards and the mke2fs commandline you are using, with the resulting error message.
