A Simple n00b question - assigning your system a name
Alright im running FedoraCore3 and I got a n00b question.. i never really looked into how to change your system name? Like when i turn on the comp and to like do remote desktop i gotta do vncviewer or whatever its called cant think of it off hand and then localhost.localdomain or whatever its called... And then in GKrellm my system name shows up as the localhost crap... How do i change this system name? Thanks and pardon my n00bness tonight...

This is all driven by your network config. If you type in 'hostname' at the command line, it echos what you have set in the Network properties.
|
Your hostname is set in
/etc/sysconfig/network |
so how exactly do i chane it from terminal or wut?

See
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...84#post1312984 for where to change host name on a (simple desktop workstation) system. If you use sendmail, it will enable sendmail to start up quickly. Even if you don't, it will change your host name the way you want it changed. |
Ok i did it from the GUI under Network config I just did mycomputername.workgroup (all my windows comp are on workgroup workgroup) and saved and restarted and it booted fine with no problems and under terminal title and login screen it shows it...... so its all good then and no editign files ?

That's why I almost always COMMENT OUT lines to I know work, and then write my experimental lines underneath, with comments of their own so I can know five weeks later what the hell I was trying to do. You'd be surprised how much you can forget in just a couple of days especially if you're working on a bunch of other people's problems along with your own! :) One of the first things that really gave me a sense of owning my own computer system (as opposed to my years with MS where I was LEASING for an extravagant amount of money the privilege to see computer crashes every day, sometimes every two hours) was seeing that name I gave my baby on top of gkrellm and in my shell prompt. It's a more friendly feeling! So little things DO count. (That's why users are so passionate about their favorite window managers and desktop utilities.) Good luck with YOUR computer. That's what Linux use is all about. |
As I have about 12 computers... I tried chanfing the hostname on just a test comp if i screw anyhting over i can easily format it... now i hope the process goes smooth with the rest of the comps.

As long as you're not administering a network, but just using a personal workstation, the host name shouldn't cause any grave problems beyond slowdowns here and there.
Lucky dog, to have a dozen machines to play with! Do you also have a day job? :D |
I dont have a dedicated 9 to 5 job, due to the poor US economy, but I rather own several ventures and do some private computer consulting work, which pays well and allows for all of the computers :)
